Website privacy notice
This website counts how its pages are used, with Google Analytics. It never asks for your name or your email, there is no account to make, and the cribbage game on this site does not send your cards or your score anywhere. That is the whole of it. The detail is below.
What this notice covers
It covers this website, the pages served at www.nobscribbage.com. The two cribbage apps the site describes are separate products with separate policies, and those policies describe the apps rather than this site. Nobs has its own privacy policy, and so does Muggins.
Google Analytics, and the one cookie
The site loads Google Analytics on every page. It sets a single cookie
named _ga in your browser, which holds a random number so
that two page views a minute apart are counted as one visit rather than
two. It is not tied to a name or an account.
Google Analytics reports, in aggregate:
- which pages were opened, and in what order
- which country the visit came from, not a street or an address
- the browser and whether the screen was a phone or a desktop
- how the visit arrived: a search, a link on another site, or typed in
The site runs no advertising, sells nothing, and shows no ads to anyone. There is no advertising network on any page here.
What the game reports
When you play cribbage here, the page reports four things about the game, and nothing else:
- which of the three opponents you chose
- whether you won or lost
- whether the finish was close enough to be a skunk
- how many hands the game lasted
That is enough to answer whether people finish the games they start, and which opponent they pick, which is the reason it is collected. It is not enough to reconstruct a game.
Your cards are never sent anywhere. Neither is the running score, the crib, the cut, or any hand you were dealt. The game is played entirely inside your browser, against an opponent that also runs inside your browser, so there is no server holding a game to send anything to. Closing the tab ends the game and leaves nothing behind but two settings: whether you turned the sound off, and the speed you chose for the opponent.
Server records
The site is served by Cloudflare, which keeps ordinary web server records for a short period: the address a request came from, the page asked for, and the time. Those records exist so the site can be kept running and defended from abuse. They are not joined to anything above.
How to switch the measurement off
Any of these works, and none of them breaks the site or the game:
- turn on Do Not Track or the tracking protection your browser already has, which is on by default in Safari and Firefox
- install Google's own opt-out add-on
- block cookies for this site, or clear them, in your browser settings
- use a content blocker, which will stop the analytics script loading
The cribbage game works the same either way. Nothing on this site is gated behind being counted.
Questions
Write to support@nobscribbage.com and ask. If you want a visit removed from the analytics record, say so and include roughly when it was, and it will be deleted.
